Welcome to the Sober is Dope Podcast with your host, POP Buchanan. This episode is called Recovery is Dope and is intended to give anyone that is addicted to opioids and painkillers some healing perspective. Today’s special guest is a person dear to the Sober is Dope Podcast. Mr. Downtown Billy Brown has a special story of healing, recovery, and honesty.
On 7/18/2020 Billy Brown will be celebrating 13 months free from Opioid Pills. Billy has decided to give back to the community by telling his story.
Take a look at Billy Brown’s life in his own words:
“I’m 54 and started using when I was 8. I got clean for the first time at 16 through church and then after a relapse at 21. I stayed clean through 12 step meetings of which I’ve been a member off and on (when I’m using I duck out) for 33 years.
My suburban drug use definitely became opioids because I could function and stay loaded and hide it. All of my years clean and in recovery were always cut off by my reservation that I could take pills without losing my clean time whenever the need arose. But in the end the disease always took me to the same self imposed prison cell of isolation that it always did and I would find myself relapsed and not wanting to tell anyone.”
Billy’s Clean Date is 6/18/2019
After finding the strength to get clean and the courage to confront his family, Billy has excelled in his Recovery. According to Billy life is Recovery has been a blast.
“Life is amazing right now. Business is so good. Wendy and I are growing closer everyday. I don’t know if you remember it one of my biggest fears about telling her about my using was that she would leave. She never even thought of it. She has supported me the whole way and now we attend meetings together again and have a beautiful group of friends in NA.
The new house is awesome except that if I’m not working the job I’m working on the house haha
All of the kids are here. My daughter and son in law came home from the mission field when they found out they were having a baby. My first grandson Pop!!
We get to be a part of the whole miraculous process. My younger daughter is engaged and getting married in October and her man is like my son. I gained 30 pounds! My first year of recovery but now have dropped 15 of them and am headed back down to my “fighting”weight of 160.
We have committed to a new financial plan and have paid all of our debt off, have 6 months of expenses put away in an emergency fund and refinanced our house into a 15 year loan to pay off in 11 with extra payments each year
I’m of service to NA with a couple of meeting commitments and serve at church also
Just a little info on what’s happening and to let you know that things are going good”.
